Happy Birthday Phrozen Keep!

The Phrozen Keep turns 10!
:new-bday:

That's right :) While the exact birthday of the site is unknown, it was created in June 2000. I wish the site creator Phrozen Heart was around to share an interesting story about the Phrozen Keep baby steps, but I wasn't able to contact him at this time. You can still check the History of the Phrozen Keep article and read about the initial years of existence of what later became a great community ;) More than 400000 posts in the forums, over 28000 registered users, 10GB of downloads and more than 400 articles in the Knowledge Base - that's what the Phrozen Keep is today.

I know I've missed some news in the past 2 months, be it because of lack of time or lack of enough news items to form an update. I appologize for that. Most notably, SheX - Lost Mage announced and released two new mods - E=mc2 and The Black Parade. Also, Evilpanda updated her Doom Shadows mod to v0.06 recently. I'm really sorry your projects didn't make it in the news and I promise to try to announce new releases on time in the future. Only time will tell whether I can manage that.

So, what's new on the site?

First, the site theme has been slightly altered, giving it a retro look that somewhat resembles the longest running and most known version of the Phrozen Keep from the past. I hope you enjoy it! :) This version of the site was created by spin in 2004 and kept running for 5 years, until the site was completely rebuilt in 2009. It was the first incarnation of the Phrozen Keep that integrated everything - site, forums, downloads, articles - in one platform, a format that we keep using today. Before that, the site and the forums were separate and even hosted on different hosts at times. So hats off for spin - while he's not active today, he has done an amazing job in the site development through the years :)

A new navigation menu has been added to the front page, hopefully making it easier for everyone to navigate to the places they want. It's not a big deal, but I've had this idea for a while now and what better motivation than the site's birthday to finally make it? ;)

Something that has been long due - a set of 20 Diablo 3 avatars has been added to the local gallery. You can select them from your User Control Panel.

And what's a birthday celebration without a look back in the past? I have contacted several important individuals from the site history, who aren't as active as they used to be, and asked them several questions. I called the article The Ancients Speak. See what the people who kept the site going in the past have to say on the Phrozen Keep's 10th birthday.

Fellow administrator Volf also celebrates the site birthday in his own way - he decided to reveal one of the big secrets of the Phrozen Keep - namely who's running the show behind the scenes. Check out the basic site rules, explained by the big boss himself ;)

Thank you all who are here to share this moment with me :) And keep on modding and playing! Diablo 2 might be more than a decade old, but it won't be forgotten as long as this place exists :)

Keep Update 03/26/2010

Hello people :) We have quite a large update to present this time. Lots of new stuff was released recently, both from Blizzard and from modmakers, so read on:

:error: KILLER WORDS
It's a tradition to begin the update with the new mod releases. Volf's mod D2: Scrabble has reached the public beta of version 5. You can download the release and read more about it here. Don't forget it's a beta, so your feedback is needed. You can see where you can submit your impressions on the same page.

:mrgreenking: MY PRECIOUS
Another new release by Volf - a small and simple drop mod for v1.13. You'll get showered by sets and uniques on Nightmare and Hell, and all runes have an equal chance to drop - simple, but effective. Grab the mod from here.

{:-) "C" MARKS THE SPOT
Now, on to an official release from Blizzard. Patch v1.13c is now released. The patch doesn't have many changes from v1.13b, but still, some more balancing (or unbalancing, depending on the point of view) was done. You can read the patch notes here and download the new patch from here.

:luvu: DON'T HATE ME BECAUSE I'M BEAUTIFUL
Speaking of Blizzard releases, they have finally revealed the 3D model of the female Witch Doctor, so now all 4 classes have both their male and female version. You can see the better half of the Witch Doctor here. She might even be pretty under all the decorations and paint ;)

:toasting: TOOLS OF THE TRADE
We also have a new release on the tools front. WinMPQ v1.66 was released by ShadowFlare and we somehow missed that for several months. Anyway, it's there now, so grab it from the official site. It's going to be mirrored here too at some point, but now right now, due to ahem, technical difficulties :)

:OOO: UNITE!
Next item is again provided by Volf - does he ever sleep? He started a list of Hamachi networks over at D3Plaza, so he can gather together players who want to play their favorite game or mod. More information on the rules of the network is available here, and the list itself is found here. Note: the features requires that you are registered on D3Plaza.

:study: SOME INTERESTING READS
A news item also comes from our affiliates at DiabloFans. During the last month or so, they did series of interviews with modmakers and published them on their website. I was proud to be one of the participants in the interviews. Besides myself, they have interviewed TrueMage, Brother Laz and Diablo 1 modmaker Mordor. Here's the full list of the articles (in order of appearance):
Mordor on The Hell mod
Onyx on Back to Hellfire
Brother Laz on MedianXL
TrueMage on Battle for Elements

:scratchhead: TELL US WHAT YOU THINK
It has been a while since I've changed the so-called monthly poll of the Phrozen Keep. Last time I asked you which of the revealed classes in Diablo 3 you like best. The Monk seems to be the favorite, but the Wizard was very close in the second place. The least favorite character seems to be the Barbarian. This poll is history now. Today I ask you - which type of Diablo 2 mod do you like best? Is it the total conversion, to the point where it's not Diablo 2 anymore? Is it the balance mod that keeps the content of the original game intact? Is it the one that adds many and many new features on top of the original ones? Or is it the drop mod where you can't see the ground from the piles of items? Vote now! :)

:burn: OVERHAUL
The screenshot of the "week" hasn't changed recently either. So this time I'm finally going to bring you a new one. This time, the screenshot comes from Diablo 3 and shows the new, very different look of the Skeleton Mages, compared to the ones in Diablo 2. Check them out here!

Whew, that was long. See you next time :)

Keep Update 02/26/2010

Hello everyone, been a while since the site has been updated ;) With Diablo 3 on the horizon, people seem to have forgotten Diablo 2 modmaking, with a few exceptions. So here we go:

:poofmad: WARNING: HANDLE WITH CARE
If you need new explosion graphics for your mod, use TryingToLive can help you. He has released a small pack of two new .dcc animations - one fire and one ice explosion. Download the pack from here

:n00b: SCRABBLE
Volf has been hard at work in the last months, and his new version of D2 Scrabble is coming along nicely. To tease all the players who are awaiting his release, Volf revealed a number of short videos to demonstrate some of the new features in the mod. Check them out!

:typing: BACK IN BUSINESS
This is a bit old news now, but anyway - the Dark Alliance mod site has been relaunched! :) You can check the site out here. If you wish to discuss the Dark Alliance mod by kingpin, then visit its forum here in the Phrozen Keep.

:cheer: THE KING IS DEAD, LONG LIVE THE KING!
After patch v1.13a was taken down from the Public Test Realm of Diablo 2, it was time for v1.13b to shine. The new test patch features a number of interesting fixes, most notably the TPPK fix and the 27 states bug fix. It also has some undocumented features, like fixes for the lock bugs with Charge and Leap Attack. So waste no more time - connect and play! You can read more about v1.13b here.

 DEADLY GALS
On to some Diablo 3 news - just several days ago Blizzard finally revealed the in-game models of the female Monk and Barbarian. So if you've been living under a rock and haven't seen them yet, then do so - Female Monk and Female Barbarian. Blizzard haven't yet added the models for female Witch Doctor and male Wizard to their site, but we all hope they do so soon.

That's all we have to present this time, see you when the time comes for the next Phrozen Keep update :)
