It's like that's VS bug begins to be annoying.
Try to modify your shortcut properties to begin in Fullscreen mode.
Look also at the amount of memory allowed by WinDow$ to the dos proggy.
Anyhow for editing any of the ds1 of the game, extract it. Then look in dt1mask and dt1level for the ID and Mask value and modify a bat to fit these values.

1. I'm in the throne of darkness, and I wanna replace 4 pillars for 4 floors, how do I remove the pillar so that I can just walk over that place?
---> you have to delete the pillars, but leave the floors, so :
* press Shift + F5 (or F6, or F7 or F8, depending of the layers of where your pillars are)
* left-click them (with shift pressed you can select multiple tiles)
* ctrl + X delete them
* backspace toggle the view back to normal
the goal is to select *only* the pillars. Remember the selection process select all the layers of a tiles that are visible. You can also just select the 4 pilars with the floors, ctrl + x, then put back floors either by copy/paste or by right-click.
(ain't it all write in the readme.txt of the ds1edit.zip you can download at the link of my sig ?)
2. I wanna change act 1 town, how do I do that, coz I don't see a MS-DOS thing for act 1 town
---> take my ds1scene.zip (ds1 pcx maker sig link), and read the readme.txt from here. There's a bunch of .bat for some other ds1 too. The key is to make a new bat, and change its parameters : the 2 numbers are taken from the 2 .txt (like dt1files.txt). the use of this 2 .txt seems weird... but it's the way the game know wich dt1 are used for a ds1 : there's a list of dt1, by theme (having up to 32 dt1 files in there), and in another .txt there's a bitfield that indicate which files of this list are to be take (but the bitfield is in decimal, not in "010001011" way).
The order of the dt1 is important, as for knowing which dt1 are to be take. If you take all the dt1 of duriel, you'll have tile's conflict : some tiles of 2 differents dt1 have the same indexs. As long as you take the good number parameters for the .bat, you won't have problems. If the ds1 don't look correct, then 1 (or both) numbers are false, open the .txt and take new ones.
3. is it possible to make black and white squares as a floor with this tool?
---> you have to include / change some dt1 to to this. Change some tiles in a dt1, or add them, then use the ds1edit.ini to use the "mod_dir" path param to make your tests easier. Use my sig "dt1 tools" to extract / make dt1.
I know there isn't any good doc on the use of my editor, but it's because I just release an *alpha* version, not even a beta, but I'll make one this week, or at least a faq. Man, next time I'll release a popular prog, I'll think twice about puting it on the net before any doc is ready . In any case, I thanks you all for the nice posts

I saw that great ds1 conversion from killingarts, and I was wondering, how did you replace all those D2 things with fallout things?
and has anybody got answers for these questions:

Hi Baz, first you need the tiles from Fallout (or any game for that matter). I used photoshop to do it, but I have a feeling PaintShop pro would have been better..I'm going to re-download it and see (my evaluation ran out a long time ago). I dragged the dt1 files I wanted to edit (in this case town.dt1, objects.dt1, fence.dt1) into the Dt1 Tools folder and used Dt1Extr to get the PCX files, eg:
Dt1extr -pal ..\d2pal\act1.dat town.dt1
It created an ini and pcx file. You can edit the attributes in the ini file to change a specific block. Open up the PCX file and you will see the tiles. The hardest part is matching up the gfx from another game to diablo2 because they might be oriented a different way, smaller, bigger, etc. If you change modes in photoshop (RGB back to Indexed), remember to set a transparent color for the background again. Once you finish changin the GFX to the PCX use Dt1make to make a DT1 e.g.
Dt1make town.ini
It will make a NEW_town.dt1, change it to town.dt1 and overwrite the old one. Then you can see the effects in the game. One thing to remember is that the town shares some of the same tiles as the outdoors, so to change this (to make sure the tile are only affected in town) Open lvltypes.txt
and change the paths to the Dt1s to the town folder (name the files anything you want).
Just remember when creating gfx to keep the new graphics within the tile borders otherwise they will cut off and in some cases be part of the next tile
Hope I helped
*one thing I forgot to mention is make sure you apply the appropriate pal file the new graphics you are going to add, act1.pal for new act 1 tiles etc.

now that we have made a big step with ds1 editing, whe should think of the next tool: maybe CV5 with preview when you're editing offsets? That would be awesome 8)

How about having CV5 display both offsets and frame size for any frame in the viewer? I would think that shouldn't be too hard for a C++ coder, since the source code for CVDCC.DLL and an earlier CV are available at the CV5 website.

Yeah that would be a good idea and it would be simple if you can find a good programmor like paul simary it would be a good tool to use and not haft to waste time figuring out offsets

* For VS problems, it seems it' s inherent to ME so ... You'll probably are waiting for my Win version. Paul and I are searching really hard how to fix it anyway
* for the CV5, it's on my job list for the upcoming century The trick is that the CVDCC dll is pretty annoying full of stufff i think are redundant and the client is not so easily modifiable. The best way we have is to get back from scratch. Anyhow, we'll need it for ds1editing in the case of inserting NPC and objects so ...

It means it couldn't create a bitmap for some reason. I don't remember what the numbers indicate, but I'll check and tell you. The main reason of the problem can be because of a lack of memory (maybe w2K didn't allow your full mem to be accessed ?)

Stupid question but just in case : does all the paths of mpq in the ds1edit.ini are good ? does it have the gamma.dat in the current directory, does it have the "pcx" directory... is the installation correct in summary...
